MAD Camp

June 18 - 22, 2012

9 am - 12 noon

 

“MAD” stand for Music, Art and Drama and it’s a week designed for your kids to experience workshops and instruction about a variety of different topics. The camp curriculum is designed around 3 specific age groups based on the grade your child will be entering in the fall of 2012.

 

There will also be a designed curriculum for Arms Wide Open Special Needs Ministry.

 

Closing Program Times

Friday, June 22 in the CCM Auditorium.

--AWO and 1st/2nd grade program will be held at 12 noon.

--3rd/4th graders at 5:30 pm, and the 5th/6th graders at 6:45 pm.

 

REGISTRATION

$15 per child.

Registration begins April 1. (Registration closes Monday, June 4). A $5 late fee will be incurred for payments not received by June 4.

----Change for 2012: For 3rd Grade and above, we will not be accommodating requests for campers to be placed with friends. Your best chance to be placed with a friend is to register at the same time for the same electives and sessions. Thank you!

 

Here is a look at this year’s curriculum:

 

Arms Wide Open (AWO)

In the AWO room for MAD Camp children will learn sign language to a song for the performance on Friday, attend a instrumental class, complete music games, and crafts. The dean for the AWO group is Sara Schapman.

 

1st/2nd Grade

This age group will follow a plan designed for them and will be split up into different groups. The five workshops they will attend are Instrument, Chorus, Music Adventure, Drama Adventure, and Art. There will also be a planned snack time for them. The dean for this age group is Sarah Mitchell.

 

3rd/4th Grade

Beginning last year, this age group can now choose their own electives that fall under 4 different categories. The dean of this age group is Joyce Lawson.

 

Here are the categories and electives:

 

Instrumental

Beginning Keyboard – For those students who have never played the piano, this is an excellent introduction to the basics of playing, including rhythm and note reading.

Percussion Fun – Designed for students with a little bit of rhythm and interest in many kinds of pitched and non-pitched instruments including boom whackers, hand chimes, and other percussion instruments.

Recorders – Interested instrumentalists will learn the basics of playing a wind instrument in a group setting. Instruments will be provided.

Harmonica – New in 2012, this class will teach beginners how to play the harmonica and a few songs to perform. Instruments will be provided.

 

Art

Art – This elective will include age appropriate art experiences in several mediums. These choices include watercolor, modeling clay and drawing.

Woodworking – Students will be taught assembly and finishing of projects using basic woodworking tools and wood.

Jewelry Design – This class provides opportunity to use beads, feathers, wire, string and other items to make unique and beautiful jewelry.

Crafts – Designed to cover a wide variety of projects and mediums that students of any artistic ability would enjoy.

 

Music

Voice Class – This elective will focus on singing techniques for the young singer. Tone, diction and other fundamentals will be discussed, as well as performance techniques.

Instruments of the Orchestra – Each day the student will enjoy an interesting video discovering the different families of instruments in the orchestra.

Computer Music Theory – Class size is extremely limited for this fun elective using individual computers in our computer lab.  The camper works at his/her own pace to discover music theory through computer games.  An instructor is available to guide the student through the different levels of difficulty.

Music Games – Students will enjoy recreational activities and games while learning basic concepts in music.

 

Fine Arts

Drama – Through games, role playing, and instructive activities, students will learn vocabulary and introductory skills for dramatic performance.

Illusion – Students have a great time learning some elementary illusions and secrets of performing magic tricks, as well as the skills of slight-of-hand.

Sign Language – This class introduces a whole new world of communication.  Students ate taught the alphabet, basic signs and a song to be performed at the closing program.

Dance – Dancers will learn choreography and interpretive movements to a song that will be performed.  This is meant to be a beginning experience in a group setting.

 

Chorus

All students participate in a large group choir, learning about singing and performing.  Songs will be presented at the closing program.

 

5th/6th Grade

This is our oldest age group, and they also can choose their own schedule for the day.  The dean of this age group is Sherry Rambacher.  The (l) next to the elective title indicates that there is limited space available.  Here is the list of electives:

 

Drama Basics – This class will focus on the fundamentals of drama staging, as well as basic emotions used in drama.

 

Drama Performance – This class will focus on the actual performance, such as improv, and also acting in groups.

 

Art – This class will focus on celebrating the joy we are God’s masterpieces through the various art mediums such as clay, drawing and acrylic paint.

 

Jesus Pops – New in 2012, students in this class will participate in mural painting, and installation.  It’s pop art based on Jesus.

 

Photography – Students will spend the week taking MANY photos around the church property, indoors and outdoors, and also develop and print them together.

 

Chorus – Students will perform songs as part of a mass choir.  This is the one class EVERY kid will participate in.

 

Harmonica (l) – Students will learn the basics of playing the harmonica, and perform a song together at the closing program.

 

Songwriting (l) – Students will learn the basics of writing a song, and learn about things such as song structure, lyric writing, and melody writing.

 

Basic Piano (l) – This class will focus on the basics of playing the piano.  This is designed for kids who have little to no experience with piano.

 

Vocal Performance – This class will focus on the fundamentals and basics of singing as an individual or performer, and will cover things such as tone, proper posture, confidence, diction, etc.

 

American Sign Language – A big hit as a new class in 2011, this class will focus on basics of communicating through sign lanuage.

 

Dance – This class will work on choreography throughout the week with their instructor, and perform 1-2 songs at the closing performance.

 

Duct Tape Fun – New in 2012, this class will work on creating art projects out of Duct Tape.  Their work will be displayed in the foyer on Friday.
